Featured PyS60 Application #2
by Pankaj Nathani

Every 10 days, we would be featuring in the “Pys60 Applications” section, a new application on Pys60 !
The prominent aim of the “Pys60 Applications” section is to help the developers of Pys60 build standalone applications on Pys60.
This time
we have a very special application as the Featured Pys60 Application #2.
Pys60 Application #2 : Mobile Web Server by Nokia !
Mobile Web Server consists of a Web server powered by Apache technology and a connectivity solution providing a mobile device with a global URL and HTTP access to it.
If you have not tried it yet, here is where you get started !
Many of you might be surprised to know that all mymobilesite.net applications like – Camera, Blog, Logs, Contact, Calender, Chat, etc are developed using Python.
The widgets (http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/mws-extensions) are using Python code in phone as well, see:
Access a Mobile Web Server from a Yahoo Widset !
In fact, Mobile Web Server (MWS) is one of the main customers for the PyS60 team in Nokia and they always have the latest PyS60 version embedded in MSW distribution !
The open source version of MSW is available at http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/Mobile_Web_Server
Now here is one more interesting thing for all Pys60 developers:
“How to host and serve Python applications from a phone”
http://mymobilesite.net, that’s the place where everything starts.
Get a domain and install it on phone. Start playing with the applications, all made in Python.
Next step might be to make your own theme, that’s quite easy: Get your Theme
Then you might think about doing your own application to host on the phone, those can be talked about here: http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=129.
And here are documents to start with: Documentation
Also there is a Blog where you can take part in the conversation http://blogs.s60.com/mws/.
Right now one hot topic is Location-based services.
_______
I have Mobile Web Server running on my both the devices and I am trying to set up something interesting on it.

After few days I think I will provide a guest login to my MWS for those of you who might be interested.
So stay tuned !
Comments and Feeback welcome as always !

Great application man !
Congrats to MWS
Is it possible to have mobile webserver running on all kind of Nokia 3rd Ed devices?
What about N93 ?
Does it support?
Cool !
Let’s just say I download the web server, installed and started it. Can it function like a regular web server (Apache or some other web server) on a desktop? What I’m looking for is, if I copied some static content like images. audio or video, can I access those resources already available on the mobile where the web server is running?
@Nishant : Yes the MWS supports 3rd Ed devices.
So your N93 is compatible!
I think you should try the MWS and post your feedback here, so that others may know about your experience
@Nick: Yes you can access the resources like images, messages, contacts, etc on your mobile from the internet, while using a Mobile web server.
this is incredible…mobile devices r better than computers:)…what programming language i should know to build my own site hosted by my phone?
@Marius : You donot need to know any programing language for mobile web server.
Just get a domain registered at http://mymobilesite.net and download MWS on your phone !
if i don’t need to know any programming language…what tools i need? how can i build my site?
You can make a start page with pointers, using the Wizard after registering your domain on http://mymobilesite.net/
I ‘m getting a error when I try to install … the Installer installs ok … but then it says: Installing Web Server … and in the middle of the installation it returns an error: Installation failed.
=[
First of all, thanks for you croozeus guys for featuring MWS! Rafael, which device are you using?
Hey Jukka! Great to talk to you. I’m you fan
Actually, i’m using a N95 8GB
Rafael. sorry for not answering earlier.. Please try to uninstall any Python versions you have in advance, and then install MWS again. Please report back here, if it still doesn’t do it for you: https://secure.mymobilesite.net/contact/
