Featured PyS60 Application #2

Every 10 days, we would be featuring in the “Pys60 Applications” section, a new application on Pys60 !

The prominent aim of the “Pys60 Applications” section is to help the developers of Pys60 build standalone applications on Pys60.

This time we have a very special application as the Featured Pys60 Application #2.

Pys60 Application #2 : Mobile Web Server by Nokia !

Mobile Web Server consists of a Web server powered by Apache technology and a connectivity solution providing a mobile device with a global URL and HTTP access to it.

If you have not tried it yet, here is where you get started !

http://mymobilesite.net

Many of you might be surprised to know that all mymobilesite.net applications like - Camera, Blog, Logs, Contact, Calender, Chat, etc are developed using Python.

The widgets (http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/mws-extensions) are using Python code in phone as well, see:

Access a Mobile Web Server from a Yahoo Widset !

In fact, Mobile Web Server (MWS) is one of the main customers for the PyS60 team in Nokia and they always have the latest PyS60 version embedded in MSW distribution !

The open source version of MSW is available at http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/Mobile_Web_Server

Now here is one more interesting thing for all Pys60 developers:

“How to host and serve Python applications from a phone”

http://mymobilesite.net, that’s the place where everything starts.

Get a domain and install it on phone. Start playing with the applications, all made in Python.

Next step might be to make your own theme, that’s quite easy: Get your Theme

Then you might think about doing your own application to host on the phone, those can be talked about here: http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=129.

And here are documents to start with: Documentation

Also there is a Blog where you can take part in the conversation http://blogs.s60.com/mws/.

Right now one hot topic is Location-based services.

_______

I have Mobile Web Server running on my both the devices and I am trying to set up something interesting on it.

After few days I think I will provide a guest login to my MWS for those of you who might be interested.

So stay tuned !

Comments and Feeback welcome as always ! :)

Is it possible to have mobile webserver running on all kind of Nokia 3rd Ed devices?

Cool !

Let’s just say I download the web server, installed and started it. Can it function like a regular web server (Apache or some other web server) on a desktop? What I’m looking for is, if I copied some static content like images. audio or video, can I access those resources already available on the mobile where the web server is running?

@Nishant : Yes the MWS supports 3rd Ed devices.
So your N93 is compatible!

I think you should try the MWS and post your feedback here, so that others may know about your experience

@Marius : You donot need to know any programing language for mobile web server.

Just get a domain registered at http://mymobilesite.net and download MWS on your phone !
